No Longer A Buyer's Market

It seems that the brief period of easily accessing talent is coming to an end. Recent CEO surveys cite access to key talent as the most significant risk to business growth. Even back in July, a Deloitte survey indicated that two-thirds of companies had difficulty filling vacancies over the previous 6 months, with 27% of those jobs remaining unfilled.

We are certainly seeing this play out in the Finance space for some roles (see Market Snapshot). With online advertising becoming less and less effective, we are focussing on the network of finance professionals we have developed over the past 12 years. We are encouraging our clients to think more laterally (and be more flexible) about the right person for a role and how to attract them. Some tips on this in future newsletters!

The good news is that the skills shortage in Finance is just emerging, so there are still some great people that can be sourced in the market. Below are just a few of the best and brightest we are working with.

Market Snapshot - Nov 2010

There has been a hiring frenzy in the last few months that we have not seen since 2007. It appears many organisations are returning to staffing growth mode (or at least replenishment mode) and are keen to make appointments before the quiet Xmas/January period.

In particular, Financial Accountants and hands-on Finance Managers are in higher demand. Good candidates in this space typically have multiple options and are being cautious about making the ideal move. It means they are also able to hold out for their target salary.

Good candidates have definitely started to ‘browse’ for opportunities after staying put during the quieter times over the past few years. We expect a significant increase in movement once the market kicks off again in February.
